As well as working in clinics, I also become involved in event work, the following are some reports from recent events.
National Karate Championships
Adidas Thunder Run 24
London Marathon
New Forest 100
Event or competition massage falls intro three broad categories, pre event, inter event and post event.
Massage just before starting the competition can be a useful part of the warm up. It can increase the circulation and flexibility (so reducing the risk of injury) and helps get you in the mind to compete. However it is important to note this does NOT replace the need to do a proper warm-up and stretch.
Pre event can also include a massage in the days immediately before an event. This treatment can work on a known problem area or more general massage covering major muscles that will be used.
Massage during the competition. The 24 hour run is a good example of this and the benefits that can come to the competitor. It helps to maximise recovery within the time between competing and can help identify and deal with any small injuries before they become more serious.
A post event massage covers all massage after an event, but really that means either straight after the competition before you go home like the example of the London Marathon.
Following any hard activity, your muscles will be very tired and in need of a massage. This will increase your circulation to speed the removal of fatigue toxins, relieve your muscle spasms and help prevent soreness. By having a massage you will be able to go back to training sooner at a faster more successful rate.
But... remember this is not just massage following a competition. This would be just as much benefit after you spend the weekend digging the garden. A massage will help ease those aching muscles and get you back in the potting shed that much sooner. Which is either a good or bad thing depending on your attitude to gardening really.
